GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR CARDY
Perth Motorplex Late Model Sedan Champion Jay Cardy has just returned home after his second trip to the US spent crewing for leading World of Outlaws driver Clint Smith.
This time Cardy, 22, took his father Chris with him and he feels he learnt even more than he did last year.
“I fitted in right away this time,” said Cardy, “As I already knew the drivers.
“Also I was able to bounce ideas off Dad, which helped a lot.
“I’m really glad that I went with him.”
Although the current economy has hurt some of the teams, Cardy feels that the World of Outlaws organization are travelling pretty well.
“It’s a very competitive series,” he continued. “There are probably about twelve drivers at the top of the pointscore chart, plus four or five rookies, including two lady drivers April Farmer and Jill George.
“Although the drivers are very competitive, they are good mates off the track, which creates a very good atmosphere.
“They will often meet up together on their way to the next race meeting and spent time just relaxing with their mates.”
The huge amount of equipment that they carry in their transporters also amazed the Cardys.
“They would have two complete cars, plus three spare engines in the truck,” said Cardy. “Also 100 tyres fitted to rims plus plenty of spare tyres as well.
“Then they would have two transmissions, two diffs, spare body panels, virtually every thing that they would need when they are out on the road.”
hey are out on the track.
“Naturally they all want to win,” he continued. “For example, if I was coming ninth in a race here I would probably back off a bit and conserve the motor.
“Not over there. They would race flat out right through the 50-lap feature race.
“If they blew the motor, they know they could fit a new one for the next meeting.
“And of course the season points are all important to them.”
Both Jay and Chris Cardy thoroughly enjoyed their US visit and are proud to say that Clint Smith enjoyed some of his best results of the season, four successive top ten finishes, while they were assisting him.
