Collie Set For Big Late Model Field

This weekend’s Coal Miner 35 has a field of Late Models ranging from veterans to new comers, and all would love nothing better than to take out this inaugural event at Collie Speedway.

This meeting has had the entire Late Model Sedan community talking as the big straights of the Collie circuit, combined with its tight corners are expected to put on some exciting racing not just for the fans but the drivers as well.

One of the leading drivers Warren Oldfield (Ultra Tune Morley/Shakerz Bakerz #15) had the opportunity to do a few practice laps down at Collie at their last meeting for the Southern Thunder Series for Sprintcars and he is certainly excited at the chance to compete on the 500 metre clay bowl. Oldfield this season has become one of the leading contenders every time he competes in the LMRA and would go in to Saturday night’s event as one of the favorites.

“It was bit rough down there that night, but the track had plenty of drive in it. The track narrows as you come out of the corners so I’m expecting plenty of contact during the night – ‘bring back the biff’ (laughs), I’m really looking forward to racing down there as I know a lot of other guys are as well.”

While he may be running for the Racin Tyres & Accessories Pro Dirt Series Crown proudly supported by R2C and Hoosier, at the other end of the field will be rookie driver Keith Gorman in the Inside & Out Car Care #75. Gorman has quietly gone about his business this summer learning the craft of Late Model racing, with consistency being his strong point. At this point of the season Gorman currently sits in third place for the Perth Motorplex Championship.

For him this weekend is like racing at his local track as this is the closest venue to his home base of Bunbury, and also for another reason. “I am really proud to race here as my wife was born in Collie; I’m also looking forward to the thirty five lap feature race. It’s been a baptism of fire trying to hold my own with the best there is in speedway sedan racing, it’s a tough division to compete in especially when your under funded but the atmosphere is great and the other racers and crews are all great people.” he said.

Gorman debuted in speedway at the age of nineteen in Albany with a Formula 500 and has also raced in karts as well. He was always destined to race as his father Eric competed in Sprintcars in the late 70’s and early 80’s, and his Uncle, Derek Gorman was a successful sedan driver competing against the likes of Ben Ludlow in the 70’s and 80’s. Coincidently the Mt Barker speedway was originally named after another relative the Les Gorman Oval and tragically in 1971 Neville Gorman, son of Les, was killed at Claremont Speedway whilst racing a sidecar. To say that speedway racing is in the genes is an understatement.

These two are just a couple of examples of a big field that includes the likes of Jamie Oldfield in the second of the Ultra Tune cars, veterans Ben Ludlow (Lucas Oils #9) and Bert Vosbergen (Worldwide Construction Machinery #4), plus Pro Dirt points contenders Brad Blake (Blake Auto Centre #0), Jay Cardy (BBT Steel #52) and Michael Holmes in the OzMine #91.
The rest of the field includes
01        Kye Blight                 Blake Auto Centre
6           Jason Moyle               Moyle Race Engines
7           Mark Duncombe        Centre Ford
10          Lee Watt                   Nullarbor Links
17          Daniel Green             DRG Roofing
18          Matt Goodlad           Diversified Machinery
25          Simon McNabb         Carbusters
30          Mark Mathews          Kings For Cars
46          Jac Dolmans              SpaMan
64          Ian Birt                      AJN Engines
70          Mark Webster           WA Hino
99          Ryan Halliday           GT Radials Refit Tyres

It’s a stellar group of competitors who are champing at the bit to hit the track and from all the positives to look at this could be one hell of a race meeting. So for some of the best sedan racing you could wish to see get to Collie for the Coal Miner 35 this Saturday night.
