Points Battle Tough Heading Into King Of The Ring

Last season the LMRA showed just how good Late Model Sedan racing can be when the inaugural King of the Ring hit the Albany Speedway last season. This year it’s expected that things will be just as good, if not better, as the season long points battle heats up with anyone in the top five still in with a chance to take out the LMRA points crown.

At the moment Brad Blake (Blake Auto Centre #0) only holds a six point lead over Jay Cardy in his B.B.T. Steel #52 machine (537 to 531). Blake is an experienced campaigner who knows how to win, but hasn’t had the best of runs of late, while Cardy is with out a doubt the most consistent racer in the LMRA. Cardy has taken a couple of wins this season, including a win at Parramatta last month and can’t be discounted in this big event.

One point further back (530) is Jamie Oldfield, driver of the Ultratune Morley #51, who is definitely the excitement machine in sedan racing in W.A. He has raced all matter of sedans on the west coast this summer and has won in nearly all of them. He is a tough and tenacious throttle stomper but has the intelligence to know when to massage the throttle on drying tracks. Watch for Oldfield to come on strong as the race comes to an end.

The next two drivers have been the surprise packets of the season, Michael Holmes and Mark Duncombe, both for different reasons. Holmes has slowly improved both his speed and set up and continues to improve each and every week, while Duncombe is a bit of a comeback kid this season, starting to rack up wins in his Centre Ford #7 after a couple of seasons out in the cold and only notching a handful of results. Holmes is sitting on 487 points in his OzMine #91 only a handful of points ahead of Duncombe who sits on 459 points.

But they won’t be the only ones that could potentially take out a win this weekend with the likes of Warren Oldfield in his Ultratune Morley #15 machine, Ben Ludlow (DiCandilo Steel City #9) and the #99 Stirling Low Loaders ‘Black Night’ of Ryan Halliday also a chance to score a win this Saturday night.
The Albany circuit has shown in the past that it can supply a surface where the racing is fast with plenty of passing, and if the first King of the Ring was anything to go by, this one should prove to be a ripper as well.
