Late Model Fireball = Fantastic.
A large and enthusiastic crowd witnessed a fantastic Fireball 35 for Late Model Sedans at the Kalgoorlie Speedway last Saturday night, leaving plenty of fans in awe of these thundering 430ci machines. The night had plenty of action everywhere, with some drivers leaving with smiles, while others have plenty of work to do to get to the next meeting.
For the Oldfield brothers Warren and Jamie it showed how one night of racing could have such highs and lows for one family in this sport. As Jamie showed why he is regarded as one of the most adaptable racers in Western Australia, winning two heats in fine style, for younger brother Warren it would all end in his second heat. As he exited turn two on his second rotation of the Boulder circuit, he went straight and collected the concrete wall, doing enough damage to his beautiful #15 black beast that it would see him retire for the evening.
A number of others impressed during the night with the likes of Jay Cardy and Brad Blake taking one win a piece during the night, while Michael Holmes finished with some good results during his two heats. Veteran Ben Ludlow had problems in his opening heat and the expected battle with the likes of Blake and Oldfield by this wiley racer didn’t eventuate as he would park the #9 machine for the rest of the evening.
While all this was going on Jamie Oldfield was setting up for a big challenge, taking on Blake in the all important 35 lap final. He earned pole after a brilliant drive to win the dash, which left all who were there to witness this salivating of what could be expected during the final.
Oldfield jumped to the lead as the final commenced and looked the goods in the opening laps, holding on to the lead during a number of restarts. As the field finalised the opening ten laps, Blake made his move and passed Oldfield to take over the lead. While all this was going on, the rest of the field had battles of their own to worry about. Cardy, Ryan Halliday, Michael Holmes, Lee Watt and Jason Moyle were waging a battle for the minors.
As the laps wound down, Blake would have trouble with lapped traffic, giving Oldfield the opportunity to close in on him, but he wasn’t able to take advantage of the situation and would have to settle for second behind Blake as the chequered flag fell. Behind them would see Cardy hang on for third over Halliday, Watt, and Holmes.
Top three comments -Third placed Jay Cardy “In the end the track finished up pretty good. Thanks to all the sponsors and my crew who got me here tonight plus all the fans that made it out here tonight.”
Second place finisher Jamie Oldfield “Any time you can have a race like that with somebody like Brad is always great. A big thanks to all the crew who put in the hard yards back at the workshop during the week to get us here tonight.”
And the winner Brad Blake “The track was fantastic and it was great to be able to run two wide with Jamie during the final. I’d like to thank the LMRA for putting this deal together, plus all the officials who made it up here to Kalgoorlie. Also my crew and especially my dad Alan, I couldn’t do this with out you guys.”
So another Fireball 35 goes down in the record books and the form of Brad Blake continues. Will the rest of the LMRA racers be able to run him down? Who knows, so best you plan to be at the Perth Motorplex this Saturday Night when the late Models again take the track in Rd 2 of the Perth Motorplex track championship. This will be the last hit out before the running of the WA Late Model Title at manjimup Speedway on December 5.
